Six miles. The very first long-distance group hike I went on, was six miles long.
In southern New Mexico, in the Gila Wilderness area lies a landscape vastly different than is seen up north.
The “ghost town”. The mountainous trails. This was this very first hike that got me hooked.
Altogether, about twenty of us made the trek down to Chloride, and mountain pass beyond.
I had with me a mere two bottles of water, and work boots (as opposed to hiking boots).
By the end of the trip, my feet were blistered and raw. I was thirsty, but complete.
